What is the Difference Between Winter Tires and All-Season Tires?

Winter Tires versus All-Season Tires

Although we don’t get much snow in California, there are some winter seasons. Even if we don’t get snow, traveling during the Christmas season may necessitate driving in snowy areas. You may need to change your tires once winter approaches. There are two types of tires: winter tires and all-season tires, although they serve different purposes. So, what’s the difference between all-season and winter tires? The Difference

On snow and ice, winter tires come in handy. Winter tires include more slits in the tread and a tread compound that keeps the tire flexible in cold conditions to increase grip. They also have a different tread pattern than all-season tires. All-season tires have a stopping distance of 36-feet, whereas winter tires have a 30-feet stopping distance. In addition, winter tires are more gripping, allowing for faster acceleration.

All-season tires are made to function on and off-road, in wet and dry conditions and temperatures ranging from 100 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. In near-freezing temperatures, they can harden, diminishing traction. Off-road driving has a high level of puncture resistance, resulting in specified durability criteria.

Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake logo on the sidewall to tell which tires are for winter. This logo was created by the Rubber Manufacturers Association and shows that the tire has been certified for severe snow use. The M+S emblem, which stands for mud and snow, will appear on all-season tires. This indicator does not indicate traction on the ice, slush, or slippery roads.
