The Difference

On snow and ice, winter tires come in handy. Winter tires include more slits in the tread and a tread compound that keeps the tire flexible in cold conditions to increase grip. They also have a different tread pattern than all-season tires. All-season tires have a stopping distance of 36-feet, whereas winter tires have a 30-feet stopping distance. In addition, winter tires are more gripping, allowing for faster acceleration.

All-season tires are made to function on and off-road, in wet and dry conditions and temperatures ranging from 100 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. In near-freezing temperatures, they can harden, diminishing traction. Off-road driving has a high level of puncture resistance, resulting in specified durability criteria.
